Multiple roads around the Zambezi Region are to be constructed and rehabilitated this year.
One of the Roads Authority board members, Helen Amupolo, indicated the Nakabolelwa to Kasika Road is one of the projects expected to commence this year.
"I'm pleased to inform you that plans are at an advanced stage to upgrade district road 3524 to low volume standards, so hopefully the trip will take you 15 minutes next time. The detailed design is done, and funds have been allocated to procure a consultant for site supervision and contract administration as well as a contractor in this very financial year. The project will be implemented in phases, and it will be funded by the government of Namibia. A total budget of N$35 million has been allocated for this project in this very financial year."
Construction on the Bukalo-Muyako-Ngoma road is also expected to commence once funds have been secured.
"We have completed the detailed design to upgrade district roads 3507, which is the road that connects Bukalo, Muyako, and Ngoma, and 3559, the road that connects Sizimbukwa and Sikanjabuka, to low volume standards, and it's a stretch of 75 kilometres. As soon as the funds are secured, we envision the procurement of a consultant and contractor again in this very financial year."
Amupolo also said that the detailed design for the construction of a gravel standard for Makanga and Masida access roads at a stretch of six kilometres has been completed, with an allocated budget of N$9 million for the current financial year, with construction expected to commence in August this year.
In addition, N$34 million has been allocated for routine maintenance activities for this financial year.
This will include bitumen maintenance on paved roads, pothole patching, blading on gravel roads, and general road reserve maintenance.
Periodic maintenance activities will be carried out with the re-graveling and light rehabilitation of the Liselo, Linyanti, Kongola, and Singalamwe roads at a budget of N$19 million in this financial year.
Amupolo made the announcements at the celebration of the opening of the low-level seal roads recently completed on the Impalila island.
