President Nangolo Mbumba has described the late Frieda Nandjala Daniel-Shikongo as an unwavering liberation stalwart with a humble and kind personality.

The late Daniel-Shikongo, a sister to the founding President Sam Nujoma, died at the age of 90 and was buried at Etunda Village, Okahao Constituency, in the Omusati Region yesterday.

The late Daniel-Shikongo died on the 12th of June in Ongwediva after an illness.

Scores of mourners from across the country were in attendance on the memorial night, where they reminisced on a life well lived as well as bid their final salute to the late Daniel Shikongo, who was accorded an official funeral.

Affectionately known as Kuku Gwamundani, her home was always under surveillance by the South African forces and raided, which forced the family to flee to their Mahangu fields to avoid attacks by the enemy.

In a speech read on his behalf, President Mbumba added that Gwamundani is among Namibia's celebrated heroines who continued with their good deeds way past the country's independence and that her contributions will forever be remembered.

"As a younger sister of our founding President Sam Nujoma and a veteran of the Namibian liberation struggle, she endured cruelty and humiliation at the hands of the South African colonial forces due to her involvement in the liberation struggle activities in the northern part of the country."

Also paying tribute to the fallen liberation icon, Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, in a message read on her behalf, described her as a woman of steel who, like many others, faced the enemy head-on to see Namibia free.

"Throughout her life, Ms. Frieda was a source of love, support, and care to the Nujoma family, and at her age, she played a pivotal role that her family and the nation entrusted to her."

Gwamundandi is survived by three children and 21 grandchildren.
