The Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security, Albert Kawana, has advised the police to get ready for the upcoming elections.

Dr. Kawana was speaking at the Police Force Senior Command Conference at Ongwediva. 

The five-day conference is being attended by commissioners and their deputies from all the regions and other stakeholders. 

In his address, Dr. Kawana urged the participants to, in their discussions, deliberate on mechanisms to manage elections and gatherings such as rallies. 

The minister also appealed to the police to revisit their policies and re-align them to fit today's environment and crime trends. 

"As commanders, I urge you to master the crime trends in the country and renew your strengths and capabilities to do your part as law enforcement officers determined and committed to fearlessly fight crime at all costs in order to safeguard our national interest, to achieve a crime-free nation, and to allow our people to continue to enjoy a peaceful environment."

The Police Inspector General, Joseph Shikongo, says the conference will identify challenges and setbacks and strategize on solutions to emerging threats. 

100,551 criminal cases ranging across murder, theft, dealing drugs, and domestic violence have been recorded during the 2023/2024 period. 

"Apart from crime, I must indicate that my office frequently receives complaints from some strata of our society that some police officers are delivering poor police service, particularly some charge offices and investigation units."

Lieutenant General Shikongo is set to announce promotions and the rotation of some regional commanders at the closing of the conference on Friday.
 
The conference is being held under the theme: Embracing innovation to navigate policing challenges.
