The Chief of the NDF, Air Marshal Martin Pinehas, says the presence of Namibia and Zambia's defence forces is a clear demonstration of the two countries' commitment to ensuring that people living along the border are safe.
He made the remarks during the launch of Namibia/Zambia border clearance at Katima Mulilo Border Post.
"It is worth noting that this exercise will enhance the spirit of good neighbourliness and peaceful coexistence along our common borders. Ladies and gentlemen, today's event marks a significant breakthrough in our on-going commitment to combat transborder crimes and irregular migration, which can threaten national and regional security. Border crimes are an issue of border control and accessible areas along our common borders, providing ground for criminals to carry out their activities with impunity. We should not allow that."
Pinehas was speaking during the joint operation launch of Namibia/Zambia border clearance, de-bushing, and reaffirmation of beacons at the Katima Mulilo border.
The NDF Chief stressed that border security is a critical element in the political, socio-economic, and cultural redirections among the communities that share the common borders.
Zambia Air Force Commander, Lieutenant General Oscar Nyoni, noted that the presence of unexploded ordinances compromises the lives of people and animals' safety and affects their livelihood.
"This event does not only imply a lawful operation but is also a testimony to our deepening bonds of cooperation, friendship, and mutual respect between our countries, which are built on shared values , common interests, and commitment to the security and safety of our people. Once complete, this operation will assure improved security and mobility in both areas of residence and border patrol teams, promote agricultural and a variety of activities by the communities around, and enhance border operation and security between our two countries."
Zambezi is one of the regions that still has unexploded devices planted during colonial time.
Lieutenant General Nyoni encouraged the joint technical team to exercise professionalism during the course of the operation.
He reaffirmed Zambia's support to make the operation a success.
