The Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund's Chief Executive Officer, Rosalia Martins-Hausiku, has urged drivers to be vigilant and responsible road users, emphasising particular concern and care, especially during the night.
Nearly 2,000 crashes have been recorded since January.
"To date we have lost many lives; we have recorded 1,720 crashes for the year, and that is a lot. We have lost 237 lives already, and we have not even yet hit the peak months of the year when the festivities start. We would like to appeal to everyone to observe road rules and regulations. And in the unfortunate occurrence of crashes, we would want everybody to know the emergency number 9682, so record these numbers in your phones when you come across a crash and dial that number. It comes straight to our emergency call centre, and we are able to dispatch emergency services on time so that we save lives."
