The National Assembly is considering ratifying the International Labour Organisation Convention 183 on maternity protection, which could greatly benefit working mothers and their families.

Deputy Minister of Labour, Industrial Relations, and Employment Creation, Hafeni Ndemula, outlined the proposed changes during the session.

If ratified, the convention will extend maternity leave from 12 to 14 weeks, protect women from dismissal during pregnancy and maternity leave, and ensure job and income security. It also includes paid breaks for breastfeeding and financial support, with women receiving at least two-thirds of their earnings during maternity leave.

These protections will apply to all women, including those in the informal sector.

Deputy Minister Ndemula emphasised that ratifying this convention would align Namibia with international labour standards and promote the welfare of families.
