Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah handed over 11 earth dams to the villagers of Onaiwala and Onyeka in the Oshana Region.

The Vice President says the earth dams will not only bring relief to livestock farmers but will also boost agricultural activities, as livestock moved up to 25 kilometres to get to the nearest water point.

"The earth dams we are officially handing over today present much more than just infrastructure. They symbolise our government's dedication to improving the quality of life for all Namibians, especially those in rural areas, by providing a reliable source of water. These dams will play a crucial role in enhancing agricultural productivity, ensuring food security, and supporting the livestock that so many of our families are dependent on," said Dr. Ndaitwah.

The Vice President encouraged the beneficiaries to set up backyard gardens to become food self-reliant and create jobs.

The Chairperson of Oshana Regional Council Andreas Uutoni says water harvested from the earth dams will enable farmers to sustain their livelihoods during the persisting drought.

"All that we are asking the community is to safeguard the earth dams to make sure they are used to the maximum potential of the nation."

Vistorina Mbinga, a resident of Onaiwala village, expressed gratitude, saying the earth dams will save them from trekking long distances.

"We are very happy because we used to take our livestock far under the scorching hot sun. We really faced a challenge because by the time you return from the drinking one would be really tired and the livestock as well, and we are now very happy."
