Namibia should start developing skills in green hydrogen in preparation for the production process of this energy source and also its benefits for oil and gas production.
The Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) held its first public lecture around green hydrogen ahead of the official opening of the Luderitz Research Satellite Campus.
The lecture, conducted by Professor Samuel John, a senior lecturer in engineering at NUST, focused on how green hydrogen research at universities can contribute to the development of sustainable energy solutions that complement the oil and gas sector in the country.
Professor John said that the production of green hydrogen could have numerous spin-offs for the oil and gas industry.
Professor John said NUST has developed short courses to be able to support the skills that are needed for the green hydrogen industry.
The oil and gas industry, according to Robert Mwanachilenga, the country general manager of Reconnaissance Energy, has the potential to position Namibia as an energy giant.
A panel discussion was also held on how the oil and gas sector can provide a new pathway for new employment opportunities while fostering innovations that will benefit all Namibians.
