Speaker of the National Assembly Peter Katjavivi will lead a delegation of parliamentarians to the 149th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, this month.
This is the last event Professor Katjavivi will attend in his capacity as Speaker of the National Assembly.
The event will bring together parliamentarians, United Nations representatives, experts, and parliamentary staff from around the world.
They will converge under the theme "Harnessing science, technology, and innovation for a more peaceful and sustainable future," which will culminate in the adoption of an outcome document.
Namibia's delegation will discuss the role of parliaments in preventing conflicts over natural resources, achieving Sustainable Development Goals, and exploring a two-state solution in Palestine.
Professor Katjavivi, who also serves as Vice President of the IPU Task Force on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, will participate in discussions about the task force's recent activities.
The IPU charter on the ethics of science and technology, which is currently under development by the IPU working group on science and technology, is also on the agenda.
The IPU Assembly is a global platform for parliaments to address international challenges and propose actionable solutions.
Namibia has been an active member, contributing to its mission of fostering parliamentary cooperation.
Namibia's MP delegation comprises Vincent Mareka, Maria Kamutali, Loide Iipinge, Victoria Kauma, Emma Muteka, Paul Isaak, and Alfeus Abraham.
