President Nangolo Mbumba and National Assembly Speaker Peter Katjavivi have opened up to speak about their best friend, the late Dr. Hage Geingob.

In an exclusive interview, the duo, who were both born in 1941, the same year as the late Dr. Geingob, paid a moving tribute to the late President, also recalling their last moments with him.

To say they were best friends with the late President Geingob is an understatement. 

Parliament wraps up 8th session

Children's Parliament is giving prominence and value to children's voices while empowering them to take up positions of responsibility.

This is according to the UNICEF Regional Director and Country Representative, who paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of the National Assembly, Peter Katjavivi, in Swakopmund.

As a mouthpiece and a platform, the Children's Parliament lobbies and advises the government to fast-track policies that can improve the rights and welfare of children.

Interface sessions of parliament play vital role

The Speaker of the National Assembly says interface sessions between parliament and civil society play a significant role in strengthening parliamentary democracy and ensuring its effective functioning as an oversight institution.

Professor Peter Katjavivi made these remarks at the interface session of parliament and civil society organizations on "Access to Parliament" in Windhoek today. Professor Katjavivi noted that the existence of a sound and harmonious relationship between civil society and parliament is a cornerstone of a modernized democratic system.

Swartbooi challenges Katjavivi's decisions in High Court

In a pivotal legal battle, Bernadus Swartbooi is challenging the decisions of the National Assembly's Speaker before a full bench of the High Court led by Judge Masuku.

The speaker suspended Landless People's Movement (LPM) members of parliament Swartbooi and Hennie Seibeb in 2021 for allegedly interrupting the president during his State of the Nation Address.

The speaker considered the two politicians' actions to pose danger to the Head of State.

Key contentions include the formation of an improper committee and Swartbooi's exclusion from democratic processes.

Swartbooi vs Katjavivi case starts in High Court

In what could turn into a legal precedent of titanic proportions, Bernadus Swartbooi, the leader of the Landless People's Movement, has taken on the Speaker of the National Assembly in a motion to review decisions taken by the legislative body.

The case started this morning in the High Court.

The motion for review addresses a series of actions and decisions taken by the National Assembly, the Standing Committee on Standing Rules and Orders and Internal Arrangements, and the Standing Committee of Privileges.

Strengthening women in leadership workshop

The Parliament, in collaboration with the International Parliamentary Union, is hosting a three-day workshop aimed at strengthening women's representation in leadership roles.

The speaker, Professor Peter Katjavivi, expressed his satisfaction with the diverse expertise represented by participants from various countries and the IPU Headquarters who are attending the workshop in Swakopmund.

The workshop, Professor Katjavivi says, is intended to produce recommendations on subjects that can be addressed in both legislative chambers concerning gender mainstreaming.

Today's session did not consider any items other than the Speaker, Prof. Peter Katjavivi, his Deputy, Loide Kasingo, and Youth, Sport, and National Service Minister, Agnes Tjongarero, as well as Swapo Party Chief Whip in the House, Hamunyera Hambyuka, wishing fellow MPs the best of wishes for Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Thursdays are normally devoted to hearing answers from members of the Executive to questions posed by opposition MPs.

Opposition MPs continue to boycott National Assembly over alleged insults from ruling party MP

The National Assembly today (Wednesday) failed to carry out its daily business after there was no quorum in the house.

This was largely due to the absence of opposition party MPs, who continued to abscond from the proceedings for the second day in a row.

The recent abrupt walkout and abscondment of opposition party MPs from the National Assembly continue to impact negatively its operations.
