The National Assembly has decided to honour leaders who made contributions to Namibia's democracy by renaming key parliamentary spaces after them.

The National Assembly chamber now bears the name of the Founding Speaker, Dr. Mose Tjitendero, while the Parliament Gardens have been renamed in memory of the late President and first Prime Minister, Dr. Hage Geingob.

The C1 main conference room is now dedicated to the late Dr. Theo-Ben Gurirab, the second Speaker of the National Assembly.

Additionally, the Blue Room will be renamed after former Deputy Speaker Dr. Zephania Kameeta, the Pink Room after Ignatius Shixuameni, and the Parliamentary Library will honour Prof. Peter Katjavivi, the current Speaker.

Speaker Katjavivi described this as a moment of historical significance, applauding members of the house for taking the initiative to recognise the legacy of those who have served the National Assembly with distinction.

As a final tribute to the late Founding President, Dr. Sam Nujoma, the house will adjourn its sittings from tomorrow through next week, allowing Members of Parliament to participate in regional memorials and reconvene only after the burial.

"It is important that members of this house are equally involved in the regions, and therefore we are not able to sit tomorrow and for the entire next week in order for members of parliament to be actively involved in the various regions as part of their tributes to the Founding President, so the recommendation is that this is the last day of our sitting from tomorrow and the whole of next week."
