Minister of Mines and Energy, Tom Alweendo, emphasizes that the oil, gas, and green hydrogen industries in Namibia require skilled labour, technological advancements, and robust infrastructure.
He stresses the importance of prioritizing education and training to equip Namibians with the skills necessary for these sectors.
During his address at the 16th Erongo Business and Tourism Expo, Alweendo highlighted the need to ensure that jobs created through this focused plan not only provide employment but also offer opportunities for growth and leadership within these industries.
Additionally, he underscored the necessity of embracing technology and innovation throughout all stages of development in both the oil and gas and green hydrogen industry value chains. He pointed out that digital technologies such as automation, artificial intelligence, and data analytics can optimize production, reduce costs, and minimize environmental impacts.
Alweendo stated that Namibia should strive to be at the forefront of technological advancements, ensuring that its industries remain competitive and sustainable.
His speech was delivered on his behalf by Penda Ithindi, the Executive Director in the Ministry of Mines and Energy.
"Namibia's future is bright, and we stand at a critical juncture in our national development and social transformation. The potential for growth in our oil, gas, and green hydrogen sectors is unprecedented. However, with this opportunity comes the responsibility to ensure that development is sustainable, inclusive, and beneficial for all. As we look to the future, I call on all stakeholders—businesses, investors, innovators, and community leaders—to embrace this challenge. Let us work together to build an energy sector that is not only economically robust but also environmentally responsible."
Erongo Governor Neville Andre also spoke at the event, noting that the discovery and development of oil and gas, alongside the emerging green hydrogen sector, represent a pivotal moment for the nation's economic landscape.
"We have a unique opportunity to create a model that balances economic growth with environmental stewardship, ensuring that our natural treasures are preserved for future generations. Technology will be crucial in our transition to a greener economy, especially as we seek innovative solutions to the challenges posed by our rapidly changing world."
Trevino Forbes, the town's mayor, mentioned that the Erongo Region is at the heart of this transformative journey, serving as a central pillar of the nation's logistics hub agenda.
"By unlocking the potential of green hydrogen and responsibly harnessing our oil and gas resources, we will not only advance the local economy in Walvis Bay but also contribute significantly to Namibia's overarching goals of economic diversification and sustainability. I encourage each of you to take full advantage of the diverse activities and insights that this Expo offers."
This year's theme, "Embracing Sustainable Growth and Technological Advancement in Namibia's Upcoming Oil and Gas and Green Hydrogen Industries," reflects a collective vision for a prosperous Namibia.
