Since 1992, the government has constructed 419 schools across the country.

Currently, there are 2,036 registered schools in total, catering to 896,311 learners.

The teacher population stands at 33,322, 22,000 of whom are female.

The Executive Director in the Ministry of Education, Arts, and Culture, Sanet Steenkamp, revealed these statistics at the inauguration of the recently constructed !Aimablaagte Primary School at Mariental.

!Aimablaagte Primary School, built for close to N$10 million, opened its doors in June 2022, with just over 200 learners.

Since then, its learner number has grown to more than 400 at the primary school level, with English as a medium of instruction.

"Now if we look in terms of the funding that the government provided over the years, just in the past 14 years, from the 2010 financial year up to the 2024 financial year, the government has spent a total amount of N$10.1 billion on educational infrastructure," said Steenkamp.

The Executive Director underscored the importance of teachers getting back to basics in the classroom and the involvement of parents in their children's education.

"Every teacher should teach effectively; the simplicity lies in the basic message here that every teacher should teach effectively so that learners progress even through each phase and so that only a few need to repeat and receive learning support to achieve basic competencies. If we do it right from the very start in the classroom, seeing that our teachers are our biggest resource, we should not have learners repeating."

Steenkamp further announced that the trimester system would be reintroduced in 2026.

Hardap Governor Salomon April called on teachers to take ownership of education infrastructure and, more so, to adopt the right attitude.

"We can have the best infrastructure, but if the teacher quality is not proper, we are not going to have the results we anticipate to have. And after having given you the education in a diploma, or a degree, and whatever you have, the government, the ministry, and the political leadership, the principals cannot be responsible for you to actually act out what you were taught at those various institutions where you have acquired your qualifications."
