Omusati Electoral Officer Elizabeth Shiningayamwe has expressed concerns about the insufficient number of vehicles needed from the public for the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) during the Presidential and National Assembly Elections in her region.
Shiningayamwe noted that while the Omusati Region requires 572 vehicles, only 312 have been secured thus far. An additional 260 vehicles, including 2x4 and 4x4 pickups with canopies, are still needed.
If the required vehicles cannot be obtained, the alternative plan is to request quantum buses from the government garage and Regional Councils to transport polling and presiding officials to various constituencies, particularly those in urban areas.
Vehicle owners have raised concerns regarding the low rental fees offered by the ECN, which range from N$1,000 to N$1,550, depending on the constituency.
Despite these challenges, polling and presiding officers have arrived at the Outapi ECN offices today and tomorrow, ready for deployment to their constituencies.
In total, there are 294 polling stations in Omusati—230 fixed stations and 64 mobile stations.
Meanwhile, Omusati Police Commander Commissioner Ismael Basson has deployed uniformed personnel at the Outapi Police headquarters to maintain law and order at the polling stations across the 12 constituencies in the region. He urged the officers to demonstrate impartiality, humility, respect, and professionalism at all times towards both voters and ECN officials.
