Kavango East Governor Bonifatius Wakudumo criticized the organisers of the 'Men Commitment Walk' for failing to mobilise attendance. The governor intervened after fewer than 10 men showed up.
"I leave my title as governor, representing the president, and get in my own car, not the government's. I have to arrange for people to gather here, and without my efforts, this event would have flopped."
The walk was scheduled for 7:30, but due to the lack of participants, it started about two and a half hours late.
"You who are running these events come here and stand around; you don't mobilise people. What do you do? You just wait for attendees? How are people supposed to come to the meeting? I had to send my grandson in my own car to get this podium. This is in Rundu. Are we sabotaging this government, or what is happening? I have to be frank: we cannot work like this, colleagues."
Wakudumo was responsible for leading the walk.
The commitment walk is part of the 16 days of activism aimed at raising awareness of gender-based violence. The event was organised by IntraHealth Namibia through the USAID-funded Reach Namibia Project.
