The City of Windhoek's dams that supply 80% of water to the residents are below capacity, and residents are urged to embrace saving measures.
Public Relations Officer at the City of Windhoek, Harold Akwenye, urges public members to use water responsibly as water is scarce.
He pointed out that NamWater only supplies about 10% of the city's water due to the low capacity of dams.
"Most of the dams that supply Windhoek are below capacity, and if I say below capacity is 5% or less. So, the dams are actually dry. So we just hope that we'll get sufficient rainfall. Irrespective of whether we get a flash flood or the rain comes strong, we're still in a drought; it won't assist much. So yes, on the other hand, we do wish for better rains."
Akwenye said that people shouldn't use tap water for swimming pools or building projects. Instead, he said, they should use grey water, which has been partially cleaned.
"We hope that, especially when it comes to your home, you will not wash your cars with a hosepipe and not fill up your swimming pools with tap water as well. And when it comes to construction we're not advising them also to make use of tap water, rather grey water for swimming pools as well as for construction."
Private businesses sell semi-purified or grey water for about N$750 per 5,000 litres.
