Inspector General of the Police, Joseph Shikongo, and his team visited the Okahandja roadblock to remind travellers to be cautious during the holiday season.
Lieutenant General Shikongo reassured road users of the police presence, explaining the importance of road safety.
"Here we are only talking to tourists and road users that are going to different areas, just to wish them a safe journey and make sure that they cross over to the new year, 2025. Indeed, it is just to check people and the readiness of the police officers. You can see we brought all the necessary facilities here; you can see the helicopters. Some of them we intend to send to the regions; as people are travelling, we will send them to patrol the road."
He also clarified that the helicopters seen in use were piloted by Namibians and not foreigners.
The police plan to use these helicopters to monitor public safety across the country.
While the police chief could not reveal exact accident statistics yet, he noted that the current accident rate was concerning, compared to previous years.
He urged drivers to avoid drinking and driving, to take breaks to prevent fatigue, and to be careful when overtaking, especially at blind spots.
Shikongo also advised citizens to refrain from sharing their whereabouts on social media during the festive season to reduce the risk of housebreakings.
