Started in 1993, the Quinton Steel Botha Athletics Club, named after the late Namibia Sport consultant Quinton-Steel Botes with the aim of grooming future champions, has started its 2025 calendar year today at the Independence Stadium.

This year, about 150 learners from different schools are joined by various coaches, including coaches from different countries, who will guide the athletes.

We caught up with Leoni, the event organizer as well as the South African coach who has been part of the athletics club for 23 years to find out what keeps him motivated.

Pole vault, which used to be part of the Namibian school curriculum, has made a return with renowned coach Louis from the Boland Pole Vault community in Paarl, South Africa.

Some of the challenges faced by the club include a lack of sponsors, logistical issues, and a decline in the number of participants.
