The Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform has lifted the ban on importing and transiting maize, palm, and palm products from South Africa with immediate effect.

The decision follows research into Bud Rot of Palms and Goss’s Wilt on maize, with authorities now confident the risks are manageable.

Executive Director Ndiyakupi Nghituwamata explained that Goss’s Wilt mainly affects maize seed rather than grain, and measures for palm products will be adjusted accordingly.

While trade resumes, the ministry urges caution to prevent harmful plant diseases from entering Namibia. Importers should avoid moving potentially affected materials, and phytosanitary import requirements will be updated.

All previous and new import permits are now valid, and the ministry will continue monitoring and research to strengthen preventive measures.
