A 28-year-old Namibian man living in the UK has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, Claudia Kambanza, also from Namibia. The crime occurred on January 26, 2024, in Hull, England.
Mateus Johannes pleaded guilty to murder and possessing a bladed article in public during his appearance at Grimsby Crown Court in December 2024. According to Humberside Police, Johannes stabbed Kambanza with such force on Hinderwell Street that the knife snapped. She was attacked in the head and, after escaping, was pursued by Johannes, who then stabbed her in the abdomen.
Kambanza was hospitalised with severe injuries to her head, chest, and abdomen, along with multiple bruises from being kicked and punched. She identified Johannes as her attacker before succumbing to her injuries.
Johannes surrendered to authorities shortly after the incident. On Friday, he was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 23 years and six months.
