SBM Offshore Africa, a Dutch company specializing in the design, construction, and operation of floating production, storage, and offloading vessels for the oil and gas industry, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Petroleum Training and Education Fund (PETROFUND) in the capital. The collaboration aims to strengthen local capacity in the country’s growing oil and gas sector.
The partnership focuses on building expertise through strategic initiatives, including scholarships, internships, and training programs. This year, 38 new scholarships were awarded, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 77 students. Additionally, SBM Offshore is currently training Namibian interns in Malaysia.
The initiative aligns with Namibia’s local content policy, aiming to create a pipeline of skilled professionals to support the industry’s development.
PETROFUND CEO Nillian Muleni highlighted the critical need for technical skills and competencies in the oil and gas sector. Meanwhile, SBM Offshore’s Development Director for Africa, Ousmane Aidara, noted the company’s two-decade presence on the continent, underscoring its commitment to fostering local talent.
Looking ahead, more Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) scholarships will be offered in 2025. One such program is already underway, supporting TVET scholarships at the NIMT campus in Keetmanshoop.
This partnership marks a significant step in equipping Namibians with the skills needed to thrive in the oil and gas industry.
