The Rundu Sports Stadium was filled to capacity on Saturday as mourners from Kavango East and West gathered to pay tribute to Namibia’s late Founding President, Dr. Sam Nujoma.
Despite persistent rain, mourners remained steadfast, demonstrating their deep respect for the nation's first president. People from diverse backgrounds and generations came together in a display of unity and reverence.
Kavango East Governor Bonifatius Wakudumo reflected on Dr. Nujoma’s enduring ability to unite people.
"I am not surprised that even in death, the name Sam Nujoma still has the power to bring Namibians together. May this gathering serve as a moment of unity, reflection, and renewed dedication to the ideals that our Founding Father stood for—the same ideals that secured our cherished independence and freedom."
He further praised Dr. Nujoma’s unwavering commitment to the nation.
"Our Founding Father was a man of his word. He walked his talk and was always present for his people. He was a unifier, a leader who transcended racial and ethnic divides to foster unity."
Academic and scholar Professor Joseph Diescho emphasized the importance of celebrating Dr. Nujoma’s life and legacy.
"There comes a time when we must pause, not to mourn or lament, but to celebrate the extraordinary life of this remarkable leader. We were blessed that he lived among us and inspired us daily."
Swapo's Kavango East Regional Coordinator, Ottilie Shinduvi, highlighted the memorial as a call to action for the ruling party.
"This is a call to remain steadfast in upholding the values of unity, self-determination, and development that Comrade Nujoma fought for. The best way to honour him is through action—by continuing his work and fulfilling his vision for Namibia."
Traditional leaders, including Hompa Alfons Kaundu of the Mbunza Traditional Authority and Hompa Sophia Kanyetu Mundjembwe of the Shambyu Traditional Authority, also paid tribute. They recalled Dr. Nujoma’s deep respect for the cultural history of the Kavango regions and his efforts to amplify the voices of elders and traditional leaders.
The Minister of Home Affairs, Dr. Albert Kawana, delivered the keynote address on behalf of President Nangolo Mbumba, emphasizing Dr. Nujoma’s lifelong commitment to peace and national reconciliation.
"In his mantra, 'A united people, striving to achieve a common good of all the members of society, will always emerge victorious,' he reinforced the importance of unity. While we mourn our hero, we also celebrate his life. A hero does not die; only the body returns to dust, but his legacy lives on. The legacy of Comrade Sam Nujoma will continue to make Namibia one of the winning nations of the world."
The memorial service served as a powerful reminder of Dr. Nujoma’s enduring influence and the values he championed; unity, resilience, and national pride.
