As Africa embraces digital transformation, postal operators have been urged to focus on strengthening the postal industry through e-commerce and digital trade.
They, too, need to address challenges such as logistical issues, payment systems and ensuring the right regulatory frameworks are in place.
This was emphasized at the 12th Southern African Postal Operators Association (SAPOA) Forum.
Namibia's e-commerce sector is rapidly growing, driven by increased internet and mobile connectivity.
Platforms such as Buy Online Namibia, Zaleka, and pan-African players and Jumia are gaining traction, highlighting the need for robust logistics to support the digital marketplace.
The Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Emma Theofelus, emphasised the critical role of e-commerce in the economy and the importance of improving logistics infrastructure to foster digital trade and ensure a competitive economy.
"Namibia boasts a road network of over 49,000 kilometers, the best in Africa for your information, and we continue to invest in expanding this network to ensure accessibility for all. The final leg of delivery, or last-mile delivery, is critical in ensuring that packages reach their destinations in a timely manner. Innovation must focus on enhancing service speed and affordability. If a technological advancement does not lead to faster or cheaper deliveries, then it is of little value."
NamPost CEO Festus Hangula highlighted the growing role of postal services in communication and logistics, driven by digital advancements, particularly in the parcel business.
He urged postal operators to streamline their operations to keep up with the rapid growth in the region, as well as for the government to equip postal operators to face challenges faced in the market.
"The logistics industry is not going to wait for postal operators to get their ducks in a row and start doing business; we must be nimble with our operations and policies that we put in place guiding the industry. We must claim our positions as the best postal operators."
NamPost has been hailed as the best postal operator in Africa at the 12th Annual Southern African Postal Operators Association Forum.
Speakers at the event highlighted how NamPost has embraced the changes of digital transformation, adapting to changing digital needs and enhancing its services in the process.
Deliberations will take place over three days to discuss partnerships and strategies to strengthen the postal industry.
