Hyphen Hydrogen Energy has engaged small, medium and large businesses to ensure a more stable and transparent supply chain of the green hydrogen development near Lüderitz in ||Kharas Region
The engagement took place at Lüderitz.
Hyphen is expected to produce green ammonia for export from the port of Lüderitz, primarily to Europe and possibly to Asian markets.
The first phase of construction for the green hydrogen project is set to begin during the first quarter of 2028.
The project is currently in feasibility phase, with a report scheduled to be presented to the government, by December next year.
Upon completion of the feasibility study, a twelve-month validity phase is to start.
Hyphen's Head of Environment, Social and Governance, Toni Beukes, revealed the local content target is set at 30%.
"The reality is that we have a very small industrial base if we look at the local content implementation, and so achieving thirty per cent is probably not likely. But, what we did is we added what we call an enterprise element so that we can capacitate as many small businesses and potential large-to-medium businesses to take opportunities from the project."
Among the issues the participants needed clarity on was the issue of 24% ownership and how transparent it will be in an entity where the government, which has to validate this process, has only a 24% stake.
In response, Beukes said, "We understand the question of the 24% equity is a valid one. But we have to understand the economics and our ability as a country to invest in this new project. On the whole, the question is not how much equity it is. How much are we earning from the extraction or development of this resource in the country? The government plays a commercial entity/regulator role, and that's the modality."
Participants were also briefed on various supply and value chain management aspects across different components of the project, including solar, wind, road and desalination.
