Newly appointed Kavango East Governor Julius Hambyuka said the region is ready to turn its obstacles into opportunities.

Despite the many challenges still facing the region, Hambyuka is convinced that only service delivery will restore the confidence and trust of the local inhabitants.

It was a bittersweet affair at the governor's office in Rundu as the regional leadership welcomed the new governor, bringing an end to the former governor's tenure.

Addressing the regional leadership for the first time as the new head of Kavango East, Julius Hambyuka says it's time to hit the ground running.

"We are the masters of our own destiny; nobody must come and tell us how to improve the lives of our people. When I look around, I see brilliant technocrats, and when I look the other way, I see veteran leaders and politicians who led various institutions successfully, whether at the village or constituency level. Therefore, I see no reason why Team Kavango East cannot deliver and improve the living conditions of the electorate in the region."

Hambyuka said that even though the region is considered one of the poorest in the country, that notion can be reversed, starting with the green scheme projects.

"It is unacceptable for residents of Kavango East to have cases of malnutrition and face starvation while we have abundant fertile land and water to grow and produce food for our own consumption. My appeal is that the green scheme products must first produce what is consumed locally and then for exported to other regions."

Hambyuka also wants to, among others, tackle youth unemployment, corruption, gender-based violence and social injustice.

The Chairperson of the Kavango East Regional Council, Damian Maghambayi, also called for the local inhabitants to support the governor in his new role.

"I urge you all to set aside any divisions and focus on the unity of purpose that will drive the progress of our region."

Outgoing governor Bonifatius Wakudumo congratulated Hambyuka on his new appointment. He also touched on his time as the regional governor.

"There were moments of immense pride, as we saw projects come to fruition, services improve, and opportunities be created for our people. At the same time, there were challenges that tested our spirit. However, in every challenge I faced, I found strength in the resilience of the people of Kavango East— their unwavering hope, their determination, and their deep commitment to a better future. This journey has been both humbling and fulfilling. I leave the office with a heart full of gratitude, knowing that I have served to the best of my ability."
