Vice President Lucia Witbooi has committed to serving children living with disabilities at the Sunshine Centre at Walvis Bay.

The Sunshine Centre, also known as the Walvis Bay Child and Family Centre, is one of the few hubs for children with disabilities.

From those with autism spectrum to Down syndrome, this place offers programmes that help the children grow.

While on a familiarisation tour, the Vice President was impressed with the efforts the centre makes to improve society.

The first Namibian gold Paralympic champion, Johanna Benson, is a product of this centre.

The Vice President indicated that many places in Namibia are not privileged to have schools that cater to the needs of children with disabilities.

Witbooi further thanked the government for providing free water and electricity to the centre.

The Executive Director of the Centre, Wendy Huschfield, informed Witbooi that the Centre will continue to prioritise the children and not compromise on its mission.

Erongo Governor Neville Andre commended the teachers, who are mostly volunteers, and the private sector for supporting the growth of the centre.

At Sunshine, the programmes include special needs education and therapy, skills and job creation, psychological support and livelihoods for disability empowerment.
