The Namibian Defence Force (NDF) has been commended for effectively assisting flood-hit communities in northern regions, where rising waters have cut off access to essential services.
The ongoing relief operation, launched last month, supports areas at high risk of waterborne diseases.
Hilja Metusalem, a nurse at Ompundja Clinic, said: “They transport critically ill patients who can’t be moved by car. Last week, they brought a patient here who was then referred to Oshakati, now she’s fine. Thank you, Ministry of Defence.”
Uuvudhiya Constituency is among the beneficiaries.
Councillor Temoteus Shivute expressed gratitude: “The NDF has helped farmers by airlifting supplies to cattle posts using a large helicopter. This is a major relief.”
NDF Mission Commander Eliaser Ambambi explained: “Flood relief is an emergency role for the NDF. We’ll stay as long as needed, withdrawal depends on water levels.”
The operation covers Oshana, Omusati, Ohangwena, and Kunene regions.
