Rundu-rural constituency councillor in the Kavango East Region, Paulus Mbangu, says that while the country has been liberated from external control, focus must now be placed on securing economic sovereignty.
Mbangu addressed the belated independence celebrations held at Kayengona Village over the weekend.
"True independence is not merely the absence of foreign rule; it is the ability to shape our own destiny, to control our own resources, and to empower our people to thrive. Economic independence is the foundation upon which we can build a prosperous and sustainable future for all. Our economy must be robust, diversified, and resilient. We face the urgent task of creating opportunities for all citizens, ensuring that every individual has access to quality education, meaningful employment, and the tools needed to succeed."
Mbangu further praised the work done during the past five years, as this year marks his fifth year serving as the regional councillor for the Rundu-rural constituency.
"We have collaborated effectively, successfully drilling boreholes in most villages within our constituency. At Kayengona, we implemented the river scheme and will also drill boreholes at Kayengona, Uvungu Vhungu, Nkondo, Mutwarantja, Cuma, Lishua lya Ngonga, etc., in the current financial year. We gravelled Mboma Road and upgraded Kayengona Gravelled Road to Tired Road. We established ourselves in most villages. We are currently electrifying Kambowo and Manwangombe Teya village and will continue to pursue various development projects. As always, we remain open to your concerns and feedback. This year, the Cuma road will be tarred, while the roads in Shamambungu and Ngone will be gravelled. We have recently completed the water pipelines for Shiwandamo and Ngone."
The VaShambyu traditional authority, Hompa Sophia Mundjembwe, cautioned the youth to refrain from alcohol and substance abuse, which are common key factors contributing to high crime nationwide.
"We should be wise to discipline our children at home. We should not give up at all. Every week we observe brutal killings of innocent lives in our society. We often say the police are not helpful, but in most cases, that is not true. If we can altogether assist the police in combating crime, their work and operations will also be made easier for them to carry out their duties."
