President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has called on Namibians to emulate the legacy of the late Founding President, Sam Nujoma, in conserving the environment for future generations.
In remembrance of the late Nujoma, she urged them to make tree planting an annual gesture, as they did today.
Nujoma died in February and was buried on March 1st this year.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah led Namibians to commemorate what would have been the 96th birthday of the Founding President by planting a tree at the Heroes Acre.
She likened the act to the late Nujoma's affection for the natural environment and a reincarnation of the spirit of revolution.
The government, together with the Sam Nujoma Foundation, dedicated the day to the planting of trees under the theme 'The Baobab Tree has fallen but its roots endure'.
Nandi-Ndaitwah described the death of the Founding President as a loss of the unifying force of the nation.
However, she said, Nujoma's comforting legacy of unity, peace and the promotion of national development, as commemorated on his birthday, remains a call to action for all to uphold.
The Sam Nujoma Foundation has also proposed the planting of other indigenous trees, including Marula, Camelthorn, Quiver, and Mopane, by members of the public at locations of their choice.
The late Nujoma's grandson, Sam Nujoma, delivered the message of the widow, Kovambo Nujoma.
