Former Minister Moses Amweelo Dies at 73

Former Minister of Works and Transport, Dr. Moses Amweelo, has died at the age of 73.

Amweelo passed away on Monday at a local hospital after a long battle with cancer.

The family spokesperson, Simon Haikwiyu, confirmed the news to NBC News.

"It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that the Amweelo family confirms the passing of Dr. Moses Amweelo, former Minister of Works and Transport, former SWAPO Party Chief Whip in the National Assembly, and respected academic. Beyond his official roles, Dr. Amweelo was a dedicated family man, a mentor to many, and a proud servant of the Namibian people."

The family said further arrangements for the memorial and funeral services will be announced soon and will be held in Windhoek.

"The family expresses its sincere gratitude for the overwhelming messages of support and condolences received from across the country – including from government leaders, political comrades, colleagues, students, and members of the community. We respectfully ask for privacy during this difficult time as we make arrangements to honour his legacy and give him a dignified farewell."

Amweelo is survived by his wife, Rejoice, and three children.
