The government has announced a moratorium on official funerals.
This decision was made during the 11th cabinet meeting, held on Tuesday and chaired by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.
Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Emma Theofelus, conveyed the Cabinet's announcement at the Government Information Centre.
"Cabinet approved a moratorium on the granting of official funerals, effective from June 16, 2025, to March 31, 2026. This moratorium will remain in place pending a comprehensive review of the criteria and processes for bestowing official funerals. Cabinet emphasizes that this decision does not infringe on the President of the Republic of Namibia's constitutional powers to confer national honors, as outlined in Article 32, Sub-Article 3 of the Namibian Constitution and the National Honours Act of 2012 (Act No. 11 of 2012)."
Additionally, Cabinet approved the formation of a review committee composed of no more than seven members. The Prime Minister, in collaboration with the Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, the Presidency, and the Attorney General of the Republic of Namibia, will propose the committee's membership and terms of reference for Cabinet's consideration and endorsement.
