The National Library in Brazil has donated 60 books to its Namibian counterpart, under the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts, and Culture.
This is the second donation of Brazilian books made this year.
This donation aligns with the mission of the National Library of Namibia to support education and research through access to national and international information resources.
"The books that the Brazilian National Library is donating today, through the Brazilian Embassy here in Windhoek, to the National Library of Namibia are a small contribution, but one that carries great significance as they contribute to bringing our countries and people closer together. This collection, which comprises 60 works in Portuguese, covers important areas of knowledge such as history, economy, philosophy, politics, literature, and poetry. This small yet representative sample of Brazilian culture provides Namibians with a deeper understanding of Brazil," said Ambassador Vivian Sanmartin.
Sanmartin also expressed hope that in the future, many libraries in Namibia will establish a Portuguese language section for those who already speak the language or are interested in learning it.
Education Minister Sanet Steenkamp extended appreciation for the donation. "On behalf of the National Library of Namibia, we also extend our heartfelt appreciation for all the work that went on behind the scenes, not only in the selection and preparation but also in the transport of these books to Namibia. We don't take anything for granted, and we know all of this has been accompanied by excellent planning and then finally execution. Now that we are the custodians of this book, we commit to making it accessible to the public."
