Former President Hifikepunye Pohamba has expressed gratitude to the Namibian people for their well-wishes and continued support over the decades.

In an interview with NBC News at his Okanghudi residence, Pohamba reflected on his life journey.

The village where he currently resides holds special significance for the former president, as it is where he was born, grew up, and later returned after spending 20 years in exile and after retiring from active politics.

Pohamba traced his journey from childhood to his youthful years, attributing his longevity to God's mercy rather than any secret formula.

He reiterated his request, made during his presidency, that instead of birthday festivities for national leaders, support be directed to those in need.

"I am still alive, and I want to thank God that he set me through thick and thin, or maybe I say through thin and thick. It was thin when I was young; it became thicker when I became older. Quite frankly I do not need anything to be done for me, but my wife and my children have been working without informing me that they are going to do something for me. I don't see the necessity for people to spend money on things like this. There are some other things that could be done."

In retirement, Pohamba enjoys spending time among others reading newspapers and listening to the radio.

He encouraged Namibians to work hard towards achieving economic emancipation, which would enable the majority to survive.

Former First Lady Penexupifo Pohamba reflected on their 42 years of marriage, wishing her husband excellent health.

"I wish him all the best strength and health because as he has now reached 90, he has also reached the stage of weakness, especially health-wise and age-wise. I wish him to be so courageous in whatever is happening now due to health and age. I want him to understand the situation and keep on giving us love as he used to do."
