Affirmative Repositioning MP Hidipo Kambala has expressed support for the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare's commitment to uplifting widows and helping them reclaim their place in society, referring to this week’s Widows Summit.
However, he questioned whether the Ministry would undertake similar initiatives for widowers, considering the rising suicide rates and mental health issues among men.
Kambala emphasised that widowers should receive equal support and questioned whether the Ministry has any programmes planned to uplift widowers or address mental health challenges, particularly among young men.
Minister of Gender Equality Emma Kantema-Gaomas says that although the ministry supports these programmes, they are initiated by non-governmental organisations, in this case, the Widows Association.
"We do not only advance needs and aspirations or assistance for only one gender. We are there to ensure that we provide an equal opportunity for both men and women, boys and girls, in order for them to participate in socio-economic developments, to be afforded assistance."
Gaomas said that they recently held consultations regarding suicides, confirming that they intend to carry out targeted awareness sessions this month around suicides and their causes.
