The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) is conducting an 11-day training workshop in Otjiwarongo for regional electoral, information and technology, logistics, and returning officers ahead of the Regional Councils and Local Authorities elections scheduled for November this year.
The workshop was opened by ECN Commissioner Gerson Tjihenuna, who explained that the training session is designed to equip the election officers with skills and knowledge, as well as the values of impartiality, professionalism, and respect for the rule of law.
"As regional and constituency heads, you must conduct your work in a non-partisan and transparent manner and within the confines of the law. Each of you must understand that your role goes beyond merely overseeing the voting process; you are custodians of the electoral system, protectors of the will of the people, and indeed, champions of democracy."
Following challenges experienced in the 2024 Presidential and National Assembly elections, Tjihenuna said ECN has adopted comprehensive practical training.
"While the 2024 Presidential and National Assembly elections exercise was an ultimate success, it presented some challenges, particularly on polling day. To address these challenges, we have revised our training approach. Hence, practical-based training. This professional development by the commission is designed to build institutional capacity and enable you to carry out your duties. You are urged to use this opportunity to build performance-based teamwork and team cohesion."
He emphasised the commission will not tolerate laxity by electoral staff, which will compromise the organisation's commitment to upholding the integrity of the electoral process.
The training ends on the 18th of September.
