Namibia is seeking closer collaboration with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO), highlighting its position as one of the world’s top three producers of uranium.
President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah met with the CTBTO’s Executive Secretary, Dr Robert Floyd, in New York on Friday to explore possible areas of cooperation.
The talks took place shortly after President Nandi-Ndaitwah announced Namibia’s intention to join the Nuclear Suppliers Group, reinforcing the country’s commitment to the peaceful use and trade of uranium in line with international treaties.
The CTBTO, established under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty of 1996, is mandated to ban all nuclear explosions and to monitor global compliance through an advanced international verification system.
Although the treaty has not yet entered into force, the organisation plays a crucial role in advocating for the peaceful use of nuclear materials.
