The Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) launched the National Strategy for Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Adolescent Health and Nutrition, alongside the Triennial Report on the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths, Stillbirths and Neonatal Deaths, marking a renewed commitment to improving health outcomes for women and children across Namibia.
Health Minister Esperance Luvindao reaffirmed the government's mandate to provide quality and equitable health services aimed at improving the well-being of women, newborns, children, and adolescents.
Dr. Luvindao said it is designed to serve as an updated framework to guide health interventions and service delivery across the country.
"This strategy is not just a policy; this triennial report is not just a report – it is a promise, and it is a roadmap for action. A promise to safeguard the rights, dignity, and well-being of those who hold the future of humanity in their hands. Too many women, children, and adolescents still face barriers that prevent them from accessing quality healthcare, education, and economic opportunities."
The triennial report provides an in-depth review of maternal and neonatal deaths, identifying preventable causes and gaps within the health system.
Findings from the report are expected to inform evidence-based interventions and strengthen accountability in maternal and child healthcare.
"These steps show that Namibia is learning from evidence and translating lessons into action. At the same time, the report provides vital insight into the causes of preventable maternal and neonatal deaths. It informs us that a significant number of maternal deaths were preventable. With regard to the direct causes of maternal deaths, Namibia mirrors the pattern seen across Africa and much of the world. Haemorrhage, hypertensive disorders, and pregnancy with abortive outcomes continue to be the leading causes."
Officials emphasised that maternal and neonatal health remains at the forefront of Namibia's public health agenda, aligning with the country's commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to maternal and child health.
The launch of the strategy and report underscores Namibia's continued efforts to reduce preventable deaths and improve the quality of care for mothers and newborns nationwide.
