Concerned community members of Oranjemund on Friday protested at the Magistrates Court, opposing the granting of bail to a father who allegedly raped his 14-year-old daughter since she was 8.
These were the words protestors shouted outside the court where the father appeared on charges of rape.
Prudence Likando spoke on behalf of the protesters.
" Our kids, as you see them behind me, are so traumatised. The teachers cannot teach; it has affected the teaching and learning process, and it has affected the whole community. It also created a widespread fear among parents, teachers, children and the whole community. We don't feel safe in Oranjemund anymore. Our community is distressed by the possibility of them being granted bail today and walking free among us, which would jeopardise community safety and trust: "
The community also demanded courts impose harsh sentences, including life imprisonment and castration, on sex offenders.
State Prosecutor Tuna Ipinge received the petition.
"Thank you for entrusting our courts with your petition, and we will use your petition in respect of the bail application. We hear you that you stand against such crimes. Yes, we hear you loud and clear, and we will represent your interest in court."
His case was postponed until 9 January 2026.
