The Republican Party (RP) says it is not opposed to the government or the Swapo Party.
Its leader, Henk Mudge, told President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah at State House that the RP's focus remains on practical, fact-based politics rather than emotional debates.
Mudge said the country faces serious challenges but added that blaming others will not solve them and urged leaders to concentrate on finding workable solutions.
He commended President Nandi-Ndaitwah for her commitment to addressing national issues but warned that the task ahead would not be easy.
Mudge said the President will need strong support from her team to achieve the goals she has set for the country.
"I think what a lot of people do not understand, and I speak for my party, is that we are not the enemies of the government or, in this case, Swapo. It is our opposition, but our focus is to concentrate on the issues of national concern and to do something about that, not to get involved in emotional political stuff, to concentrate on facts. I had good meetings that time with Honourable Pohamba, and we discussed a number of things; he took note. I think we have got a lot of challenges. We all know what it is. We can play the blame game for that, but it's not going to solve anything. We need to see what the solution is."
In response, President Nandi-Ndaitwah said, "We have to understand our priorities as a nation, and these are priorities that the people of Namibia have also prescribed, and currently we are being guided by our NDP6. And NDP6, as you know, has those eight critical areas in order to meet the needs of our people. Agriculture, sports, education, health, land, creative industries, and housing and sanitation, and of course, we should not forget the enablers: mining (this is a mineral-based country), water (without water you can't do anything), and energy (when you talk about industrialisation, agriculture, tourism, and logistics). And so for us, when we make laws, we feel, 'Let us engage'."
The government and the Republican Party leadership met as part of the President's ongoing consultations with political parties.
