As the world marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has praised the organization's pivotal role in advancing peace and supporting global development.
Joining world leaders in commemorating the milestone, Nandi-Ndaitwah said the UN Charter continues to shape international values and cooperation.
She noted that eight decades later, it remains important to celebrate the Charter’s contribution “not only to Namibia, but to the broader international community.”
The President commended the UN’s convening power as central to multilateralism and urged it to remain agile in addressing global challenges such as climate change, conflict, poverty, and inequality.
"The values embedded within the UN Charter remain vital in guiding future generations towards a more equitable and just world," she said, adding that the Charter’s principles have been instrumental in Namibia’s path to self-determination.
"We are, therefore, proud that our journey serves as an inspiring example of how international governance can uplift nations, highlighting the importance of solidarity and cooperation in addressing the injustices of the past and forging a brighter future as envisioned in the Pact for the Future and its annexes, the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration on Future Generations," she added.
UN Day, observed annually on October 24, marks the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945.
The day also provides an opportunity for member states to reaffirm their commitment to the UN Charter in confronting current global realities that threaten to reverse the progress achieved over the past eight decades.
