The Namib Desert Diamonds (NAMDIA) Foundation has spent N$5.9 million upgrading education and water infrastructure at various rural primary schools in the Kavango West Region.

NAMDIA built a block of four classrooms with a storeroom at Hamweyi Primary School, Ekondjo Junior and Senior Primary School, and Sitenda Junior Primary School.

Kasivi Primary School and Ncaute Primary School each received a 10,000-litre water tank with its own stand that will assist in keeping their school gardens alive.

Namdia's board chairperson, Justus Hausiku, says the construction of classrooms and the installation of water tanks is more than philanthropy.

"It is our contribution toward the national goal of ensuring inclusive, equitable, safe learning environments and expanded access to potable water across Namibia. These initiatives are made possible through the NAMDIA Foundation, our corporate social investment vehicle, which ensures that the wealth generated from our diamond trade directly benefits the people of Namibia."

Before the new classroom blocks, the schools struggled with overcrowding, and a number of the learners were being taught under trees.

Chairperson of the National Council and Mankupi Constituency Councillor, Lukas Muha, stated, "Rural areas in Namibia are severely affected by poor infrastructure development, which creates inequality in education. The classroom blocks and water tanks we are handing over today are the first of many, and they symbolise our commitment to removing barriers to education and closing the development gap. Furthermore, these new facilities will help address overcrowding in classrooms, improve the quality of education, and promote health and safety for learners."
