The Omaheke Regional Council handed over 260 cattle to the Itireleng Community Council at Epukiro RC in the Okorukambe Constituency.

The livestock project is meant for self-sustainability and wealth creation of local communities.

The Chairperson of the Omaheke Regional Council, Ignatius Khariseb, pointed out that the council bought 40 heifers with two bulls back in 2014 with the primary objective of strengthening households and improving agricultural development aspects.

Despite various challenges that the project went through, such as drought and lack of water, the council finally handed over the livestock to the community.

"It is therefore my firm belief that by entrusting this herd of cattle to the Itireleng community council, we are taking a decisive step towards releasing the national goal for food security and sustainable livelihoods for our people. We must at the same time also acknowledge and accept that this handover also carries responsibility."

The Okorukambe Councillor, Rocco Nguvauva, maintained that the livestock given represent economic stability, nutritional security and the preservation of cultural pride.

"This is an opportunity for you to become a contributor to our local economy and an inspiration to your neighbours. Again, as a recipient, I urge you to keep these animals not only as assets but also as a trust to care for you, so manage them well and utilise this blessing to grow your family's prosperity."

On behalf of the community, Oswald Langman welcomed the gesture.

"One would like to thank the Omaheke Regional Council for being very patient in order to come and today hand over these cattle after a long time; however, this cattle project has taught us that you can go anytime and go knock at government offices and get assistance."

The Regional Governor, Pijoo Nganate, urged the beneficiaries to increase the number of livestock and better their living standards.
