In Gobabis, one of the leaders of the A Right to Shelter Association has been arrested on charges of attempted murder and negligent driving. According to the police, the incident occurred when he allegedly struck an officer who was performing his duties.
This came after the suspect and supporters of the Association were told to vacate the open space, which they had illegally occupied behind Epako Secondary School, as the venue was already booked by another party for their Gobabis weekend rally.
The town's Chief Executive Officer, Sophia Eises, also confirmed with NBC News that the venue was already booked by another party in agreement with the school, since they are the ones temporarily using the field, and that the association was informed through a letter.
Eises added that it was when the group refused to vacate and remove their tents that the council sought police intervention.
Police Regional Commander Heinrich Tjiveze told NBC News that the leader of the association was arrested on charges of attempted murder and alternatively negligent driving after bumping a police officer who was performing his duties.
