4 of the 7 inmates awaiting trial, who escaped from the Ngoma Police Station, appeared in the Katima Mulilo Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

The 5th escapee was re-arrested on Thursday morning.

The escapees cut through the roof of the holding cell and used blankets to make their way out in the early hours of Monday morning.

In an interview with nbc News, Zambezi Police Commander Andreas Shilelo said the escapees were apprehended in the areas of Ihaha, Kabulabula and Nakabolelwa.

Commissioner Shilelo added that the community members played a huge role in assisting the police.

"What they did was they got hold of these people, they pretended like they wanted to help them, and thereafter in the process they contacted the police, and the police came to the scene and arrested them."

Commissioner Shilelo noted that this is the 2nd time inmates have escaped from Ngoma Police Station this year.

The first one happened in April, involving 5 inmates who were also re-arrested.

Shilelo attributed these incidents to police negligence.

"It seems that there is a lack of management and control over the officers who are on duty by the supervisors, so what I am looking at is getting the report from our investigators.  Because they are on the ground, they were here this morning to give me a brief on how they are going with the ongoing investigation on the part of the officers involved. "

A visibly annoyed Shilelo suggested a change of management at the station.

"So we really need not to continue with the same management that is not in control, as it is stipulated in the police act. So under myself, I have to recommend for the inspector general to make a decision so that we can be able to make a change in the management of the station."
