Consistent rainfall in Rundu has led to soil erosion in parts of the Tutungeni location.
Kavango East Governor Hamunyera Hambyuka has called for urgent solutions to prevent further damage.
Tutungeni residents have faced recurring issues during rainy seasons, where water erodes the soil, resulting in considerable loss of land adjacent to their homes and endangering their properties.
They tried blocking water, but the pressure proved too high. Houses near the river now risk flooding if current rainfall continues.
"The town plan did not include a channel for water to pass through. So the water got stuck. When it broke free, it flowed toward the river downstream, carrying soil with it," said Hambyuka.
Due to erosion, seven deep trenches have formed, damaging access roads.
To protect lives and property, regional leadership seeks emergency solutions.
"There will be no miracle here. We must secure funds and hire a company experienced in prevention work. We're suggesting they start from the old police station to where the soil erosion is occurring. Previously, people walked from Sauyemwa to town and back, but now they cannot pass—the entire area is damaged with big holes. They must use the main tar road."
Hambyuka urged residents and motorists to stay cautious and avoid trenches.
