The Swapo Party has extended its solidarity with the people of Venezuela and with President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, following his unprecedented capture by the United States of America.

Secretary General Sophia Shaningwa reaffirmed the ruling party's commitment to the principles of sovereignty, self-determination and mutual respect among nations.

Shaningwa reiterated that each nation deserves to chart its own path, preserve its own culture, and allow its people to be masters of their own destiny by being free from external imposition or interference.

The Swapo Party, she said, condemns the unilateral action undertaken by the United States, viewing it as contrary to established norms of international law and the UN's Charter.

She further stated that such measures, including the military invasion of a sovereign nation and the subsequent detention of a sitting head of state, undermine the foundational tenets of diplomatic relations and pose a serious threat to global stability.

The party called for the immediate and unconditional release of President Maduro and his wife for them to resume their duties in service of Venezuelans.

She urged all nations and international organisations to uphold the sovereignty of independent nations and adhere strictly to international law.

Violations of these principles, she added, erode trust among peoples and hinder collective efforts towards global peace and cooperation.

She urged the international community, particularly peace-loving nations in Africa and the world, to demonstrate solidarity with Venezuelans.

Shaningwa urged Namibians to stand together in defence of peace and unity, to ensure that the voices of sovereign nations are respected and protected at all costs.

She said through dialogue and adherence to multilateral frameworks, each nation can realise the hopes and aspirations of its peoples.
