The Ministry of Health and Social Services has announced 32 confirmed cholera cases in the Grootfontein District as of 12 January. Of 99 suspected cases, 32 were confirmed, with zero deaths recorded.
The ministry has deployed a national response team to the Otjozondjupa Region following last year's cholera outbreaks in Kunene and Grootfontein.
In a statement, Executive Director Penda Ithindi said the low number of confirmed cases testifies to early detection, appropriate management by health workers, and the public's quick response in seeking help.
"The ministry has deployed a national multi-sectoral response team to the Otjozondjupa Region to intensify surveillance, testing, and case management. Because this outbreak stems from challenges with water, sanitation, and hygiene, we are working with partners to provide safe water, improve sanitation, and manage waste removal. With schools reopening, we are partnering with the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts, and Culture to ensure school safety."
Ithindi said the outbreak remains small, with 0 to 2 cases reported daily, though transmission continues.
