From hosting continental games to sending teams to international competitions, the Namibia Sport Commission reviews how sport performed in the country during 2025.

The Namibia Sport Commission works with stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture, to support sport federations and athletes.

During the year, the commission oversaw the hosting of the AUSC African Youth Games and the COSAFA Girls' Football Championship. Chief Administrator Freddy Mwiya reflected on sport activities in 2025.

"As we reflect on the year, many federations competed at international level. It was not an Olympic year, but teams still took part in several competitions. Football did not qualify as planned, but the team showed they can compete. Several team sports qualified for international events. The netball team competed in the Sauti Cup and also played in Malawi. In hockey, two junior teams qualified for the World Cup championships. Rugby won a silver medal, although qualification was not achieved," Freddy Mwiya said.

Mwiya says the year also came with challenges, particularly regarding the preparation time for major events.

"One major challenge was hosting the African Union African Youth Games within six months. Normally, hosting requires about three years of preparation. Despite this, Namibia managed to deliver the event. For the first time, Namibia finished second overall at the games," Mwiya said.

Mwiya also spoke about the role of sport governance in sport development, noting that national plans are shifting toward the commercialisation and professionalisation of sport, as well as infrastructure development.

The commission also hosts the Namibia Annual Sport Awards, where athletes and federations are recognised for their contribution to sport.
