Namibia's export sector could soon see new opportunities as China introduces a new trade development policy.

Expected to come into effect on the first of May this year, the move could help diversify Namibia's export market, strengthen local production, and encourage policy reforms to boost competitiveness.
China's extended zero-tariff policy will benefit 53 African nations.

China's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian earlier on announced that the country is anticipated to eliminate import taxes from practically all African nations.

The action broadens an existing agreement that grants zero-tariff status to imports from 33 African nations.

The upcoming trade development is expected to reshape how Namibia positions its products in global markets.

Speaking on NBC's Good Morning Namibia programme, Economic Nnalyst, O'brien Samahiya says the policy presents an opportunity for Namibia to better prepare its local industries for export growth while expanding market access.

“I think it is an opportunity for African countries to be able to take advantage of this opportunity. I think we will be able to see more changes to be able to expand exports. I believe it is an opportunity for African countries to do so. I think going forward we will be able to expand exports to China.”

According to Dr. Samahiya, Namibia has historically relied heavily on exporting primary products to China.

This development should encourage broader market engagement and policy adjustments to maximize long-term benefits.

He added that policy reforms will be critical to ensure Namibia fully takes advantage of emerging trade opportunities and strengthens its role within continental and global value chains
