President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has expressed condolences following the death of James Uerikua, who died this afternoon in a motor vehicle accident.

In a statement, President Nandi-Ndaitwah said Uerikua, a Member of Parliament in the National Assembly, died after the crash together with his 14-year-old son.

The President said the loss of the young lawmaker is a painful loss not only to his family and the Swapo Party, but to the nation at large.

She said Uerikua was a young and promising leader, a brilliant mind, and a well-spoken voice in the national discourse.

The Head of State said Uerikua’s death comes at a time when the country faces complex challenges that require the energy, clarity, and commitment of its sons and daughters.

She noted that his presence in the National Assembly exemplified intellect and purpose, and that his contribution to strengthening the country's democracy will endure.

Uerikua served as a Member of Parliament and chaired the National Assembly’s standing committee on international relations, defence and security.

He previously served as governor of the Otjozondjupa Region from 2020 to 2025, where he was involved in regional administration.

Earlier in his career, he worked as a development planner in the Office of the Vice President and was involved in programmes targeting marginalised communities.

Police are expected to provide further details on the circumstances of the crash.
